Philosophy Statement:

A student attending Lowell Learning Center (LLC) is provided with an individual pathway for earning credits toward high school graduation.  In developing a student pathway, consideration is given to ability, achievement, learning style, special needs, and personal issues outside of the school setting.  The educational pathway provides the greatest possible chance for student success.  To increase the potential for success, student candidates for Lowell Learning Center read, consider, and sign the “Student Commitment to Success” contract prior to beginning classes.

Student Body:

Lowell Learning Center serves Lowell High School and Hanover Central High School students needing a non-traditional route to a high school diploma.  Students benefiting from this opportunity include:

  • students with parenting responsibilities;
  • students with a history of failure in the traditional school setting;
  • students who have left school without a diploma;
  • students who have been expelled from the traditional setting;
  • students who exhibit chronic truancy and absenteeism in the traditional setting;
  • students with work responsibilities that make traditional school hours unfeasible;
  • students having a medical referral for an alternative educational setting;
  • students needing additional credits toward graduation; and
  • students needing remediation for the End-of-Course Assessments (ECA).

Referral Procedure:

Students entering Lowell Learning Center are referred through the high school guidance office to the building principal.

  • If the referral is approved by the principal, the appropriate guidance counselor will complete the Student Profile and the Graduation Worksheet, and an intake conference will be scheduled by the LLC teacher.
  • During the intake conference, the student’s learning path with be reviewed with the student and parent(s)/guardian(s), and a class schedule will be determined.

Curriculum:

Most classes at LLC are a combination of computer modules and materials taken directly from the traditional high school curriculum.  The LLC curriculum also includes a work/study and a service-learning component whereby students may earn elective credits.
