Safety and Security

Welcome to the Safety and Security Department

Tri-Creek School Corporation has made a strong commitment to keeping all of our students and staff safe. Online safety resources are provided for when students are out of school.

At the heart of the Tri-Creek School Corporations Safety and Security Department is the school resource officer (SRO) program. The concept of having police officers in schools has actually been around since the 1950s in communities all across America. In many parts of the country, these officers were called police liaison officers, and they were typically assigned to this job as an extra duty. As a greater emphasis towards school safety shifted in the 1980s and 1990s, more and more communities began to assign full-time uniformed police officers to the schools. The SRO’s role is designed not only to protect the students and staff throughout the day, but also to help connect with and mentor students as a trusted adult.

Tri-Creek School Corporation currently has one full-time uniformed officer working within the school district. Officer Cory Burkus of the Lowell Police Department is primarily assigned to Lowell High School; however, he also does regular visits and assists the administration at Lowell Middle School and each of the three elementary schools. Tri-Creek School Corporation also employs a director of safety and security, Mr. Steve Jackson, formerly an SRO from the Valparaiso City Police Department. Together, along with the administration and staff, they form a team that ensures that students and staff are safe and secure.

The Tri-Creek School Corporation Safety and Security Department will continue to grow and become more valuable with the input and involvement of parents and the community.
